In a recent interview with an American college newspaper, The Maine Campus, Gerard Way had a few harsh words about the definition and over use of the word/genre “emo”. Way stated, “I think emo’s a pile of shit. I think emo is fucking garbage. It’s bullshit.” He continued to follow with, “I think there are bands that we get lumped in with that are considered emo and, by default, that starts to make us emo and all I can say is anyone actually listening to the records, put the records next to each other and listen to them and there’s actually no similarities.”
A few months back Gerard Way’s band, My Chemical Romance were a topic on The War on Emo, which was a feature in a Britsh newspaper, The Daily Mail. Way has declared war on emo himself. Where is this going?

I think Gerard Way needs to get over his obsession with not being defined as “emo”. He’s stated how much he hates the “emo” genre more than I care to count; it only needs to be said once, MAYBE twice and then he should let it go; I’m sure he has more things to worry about than this “emo” business. Quite frankly; he’s being a little whiny about it.
Mikey Way, his brother, has made a comment about it; he seemed very laid back when he spoke about emo. Gerard needs to take an example from his (younger) brother, and grow up about it.
I’m a fan of My Che;, I’m not looking to demoralize or discredit them in anyway, but their front man needs to start acting more like a leader rather than acting like a child.
This is music; and no matter what the band defines themselves as, there will be people who disagree. It’s a fact of music entertainment, and the sooner Mr. Way learns this, the better.

Actually I think Gerard is being very reasonable! He only says that there not emo over and over and that it is bullshit because he cares and knows that cutting yourself will not solve any of your problems and that it does nothing but harm you. And there is nothing rong with arguing about something that you dislike especually if your being called something you dont like! I would not like to be called a “prep” and I would argue about it like how Gee is arguing about not being called “emo”.

I completely agree with Gerard’s statement. Emo is a pile of shit and it’s reasonable for him to mad about getting lumped into it. I don’t think it’s childish of him to take this so seriously. After all, we are talking about his life’s work and his profession.
Being called Emo discredits MCR’s work and gives them an image that is not portrayed in their music.
I would gladly serve in Gerard’s Army to fight the War on emo.
